MIDFLORIDA was established in 1954 as Polk County Teachers Credit Union. Polk County Superintendent told a young history teacher, Rebecca Keith, that teachers in Polk County needed a credit union and asked her if she would manage the credit union as her first treasurer . Ms. Keith started putting all the appropriate documents online and started accepting deposits, which she was known to keep in a shoebox at her home.

Polk County Teachers Credit Union started with only 10 founding members, but ended the first year with 273 members and about $ 7,000 in deposit.

In 1957, the credit union expanded its charter to serve the employees and volunteers of the Highlands County School Board, and in 1963 the first professional office of MIDFLORIDA was opened.

In the late 1970s, the credit union changed its name to MIDFLORIDA Schools Federal Credit Union. The credit union continued to grow and prosper, and in 1997 it applied for and was granted permission to extend its charter to communities in Polk and Highlands counties. This change marked a turning point for MIDFLORIDA, as anyone who lived, worked, worshiped or attended a school in Polk or Highlands County could join. In the same year, the MIDFLORIDA Schools Federal Credit Union became the MIDFLORIDA Federal Credit Union.

In 2002, MIDFLORIDA extended its community charter to Okeechobee, Sumter and Hardee counties. In view of its future expansion, MIDFLORIDA was authorized in 2009 to become a state-owned credit union, thereby shortening the company’s name to MIDFLORIDA Credit Union.

Other changes took place in 2010 and 2012 with mergers with Bay Gulf Credit Union and Indian River Federal Credit Union. These conversions increased MIDFLORIDA’s ability to provide services across the state, from the Tampa Bay market to the Treasure Coast.

MIDFLORIDA now has close to 50 branches, more than 800 employees and assets of more than $ 3.3 billion. At present, they serve more than 314,000 members in the Central Florida region with products and services that rival all local banks, while maintaining the credit union philosophy of excellent personal attention.
