Gilda’s New York City Club (GCNYC) was created in memory of talented Saturday Night Live actress, Gilda Radner, who said that cancer gave her membership to an elite club she did not belong to. While living on the west coast, Gilda was part of a community of psychological and social support for people with cancer and their families. It was there that she found friendship, hope and a new sense of control over her life. Before moving from her ovarian cancer in 1989, she expressed the wish that a similar community exists on the East Coast.
Founded by Gene Wilder (then Gilda’s husband), psychotherapist Joanna Bull, Mandy Patinkin and Joel Siegel, as well as by other friends and generous donors, GCNYC opened its iconic Red Door in 1995 to provide a venue where patients cancer patients and their families could find support, resources, and a community that cares.
In 2000, the success of Gilda’s Club NYC gave birth to Gilda’s Club Worldwide, an organization dedicated to the development of a national network of pavilions. In 2009, Gilda’s Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community to form the Cancer Support Community (CSC), which is now the largest cancer support network in the country. Although a member of the CSC, Gilda’s Club NYC is an administratively and financially independent entity.
The Gilda’s Club NYC annually reaches more than 20,000 people through direct service to its partner clubs and off-site hospitals, as well as through its website, health fairs, schools, business presentations and inquiries. Men, women, teens and children attend free support groups, educational conferences and healthy lifestyles workshops at the West Village clubhouse or at some medical centers in New Town. York.
Their support and education program is an integral part of conventional medical treatment, restoring a sense of control, redefining hope, reducing stress and isolation, and educating participants to better manage their care during and after the treatment.
Cancer does not affect only the cancer patient. It also affects the whole family, which is why Gilda’s Club NYC support s caregivers, family members and friends, as well as those who have lost a person, as well as those who have been diagnosed with cancer.
