What Happened to Credit Suisse?

On March 19, 2023, Swiss bank UBS Group AG agreed to acquire Credit Suisse for CHF 3 billion (US$3.2 billion) in an all-stock deal brokered by the Swiss government. The acquisition was completed on June 12, 2023, and Credit Suisse Group AG was merged into UBS Group AG.

For Credit Suisse Mexico clients: The bank’s operations continue under the UBS umbrella. All direct subsidiaries of Credit Suisse AG have become direct subsidiaries of UBS AG.


Changes to Mexico Operations

Important: In February 2023, Casa de Bolsa Credit Suisse México announced that capital markets operations would cease starting in Q2 2023. The focus shifted to Private Banking services only. This cessation of operations did not determine immediate closure, but services have been reduced.

Services discontinued:

  • Financial advisory to corporate clients
  • Brokerage services
  • Capital markets services to institutional clients

Services continuing under UBS:

  • Wealth management
  • Investment banking (limited)
  • Private banking services

Mexican Government Statement

Gabriel Yorio, Mexico’s Undersecretary of Finance, reassured customers that they should not panic about the UBS acquisition. He stated that the bank was “in a process of optimizing their balance sheets, minimizing risks” and would “retract a bit from the Mexican market, but will remain present.”


Current Status (2026)

As of December 2024:

  • Banco Credit Suisse México remains a multiple banking institution, member of Grupo Financiero Credit Suisse México, now under UBS AG
  • Casa de Bolsa Credit Suisse México has sufficient capital and liquidity but its continuity depends on shareholder decisions and regulatory compliance
  • UBS in Mexico currently offers wealth and investment banking services
