Bankruptcy Status
On April 5, 2019, the Council of the Central Bank of Montenegro adopted the decision to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against Atlas Banka AD Podgorica. The bank has been in bankruptcy since April 11, 2019, and is no longer conducting normal banking operations.
Background
Founded in 2002, Atlas Banka was one of Montenegro’s leading business banks, providing retail and corporate banking services. In December 2018, the Central Bank of Montenegro placed Atlas Banka under interim administration after revealing that its capital failed to meet minimum risk requirements.
Despite attempts to find investors for a €22 million recapitalization, no bids were received, leading to the bankruptcy declaration.
Impact on Customers
- Total deposits: €189 million at time of bankruptcy
- Protected deposits: €89 million (deposits up to €50,000)
- Employees affected: 198 staff lost their jobs (90% of workforce)
Deposit Protection
Depositors with funds up to €50,000 are covered by Montenegro’s Deposit Protection Fund (FZDCG). As of April 2026, deposit payouts are still ongoing through the Fund.
Depositors do NOT need to file claims for amounts recorded in the bank’s books. Payments are processed automatically through the Deposit Protection Fund.
Bankruptcy Administrator
Mirko Radonjić, a graduate economist from Podgorica, was appointed as bankruptcy administrator of Atlas Bank AD Podgorica.
