Banca de Economii Moldova (BEM) – In Liquidation Since 2015

🚨 Bank Status: IN LIQUIDATION – FRAUD SCANDAL

Banca de Economii (BEM) has been in forced liquidation since October 16, 2015. The bank collapsed following a massive fraud scandal that resulted in the disappearance of up to USD 1 billion – equivalent to 12% of Moldova’s GDP.

Critical Warning

Banca de Economii is no longer operating as a bank. It exists only to wind down operations under supervision of the National Bank of Moldova. Do not attempt to open accounts or conduct business with this institution.

What Happened

The 2014 Moldovan bank fraud scandal involved the fraudulent acquisition of loans from Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala, and Unibank. The Kroll investigation (a financial investigative firm) examined transactions from 2012 to 2014 and identified complex schemes used to extract funds.

Liquidation Status (2026)

The liquidation process continues under National Bank of Moldova supervision. As of late 2026:

  • Monthly liquidation reports are published on bem.md
  • Auctions of bank assets continue at their Chisinau location
  • Total cumulative emergency credit repayments have reached MDL 1.71 billion
  • Recovery efforts for stolen funds continue
