About Huntington Bank
Huntington Bank was founded on January 3, 1866 as P.W. Huntington and Company by Pelatiah Webster Huntington in Columbus, Ohio. The Huntington family had a distinguished American heritage – Benjamin Huntington, P.W.’s great-grandfather, helped start the Revolutionary War by calling the first revolutionary meeting in Norwich, Connecticut in 1774, and Samuel Huntington signed the Declaration of Independence and served as president of the Continental Congress.
P.W. Huntington began working at age 14 on a whaling vessel that sailed to Russia, then became a messenger at a Columbus bank at age 17. He opened his own bank with a principled approach to banking that would guide the institution for over 150 years.
In 1966, the bank reorganized as Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, becoming a bank holding company. In June 2021, Huntington completed a major $22 billion all-stock merger with TCF Financial Corporation, significantly expanding its presence in Michigan, Minnesota, and Colorado.
In October 2026, Huntington announced the acquisition of Cadence Bank, a $53 billion regional bank, which will create a top 10 U.S. bank with $276 billion in assets upon completion in 2026.
