Over the Jubilee weekend, EasyJet cancelled scores of flights, leaving potential holidaymakers last-minute. Tens of thousands of British travellers are estimated to have been left stranded in airports around Europe following nearly 200 flights being cancelled over the weekend. Todays strike by airport workers is set to result in about 100 flights being cancelled at Paris-Charles de Gaulle overall, with services from Air France and EasyJet among those hit hardest.
Earlier in May, budget airline EasyJet cancelled more than 200 flights because of delays and other restrictions in airports that affected travel over school holidays. EasyJet cancelled 10 flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and London-Gatwick, Luton, and Milan-Malpensa. EasyJet has proactively reduced the number of flights it is operating in June in an effort to lessen the chaos that the airport has seen over recent weeks caused by last-minute flight cancellations.
Today (13th June) comes on the heels of difficult weeks for the airline, where thousands of customers were affected by delayed and cancelled flights at the last minute. The airline is not alone in its turbulence, with other carriers having experienced major outages on their networks over recent months. These are challenging times, not only for airlines, but the wider commercial aviation industry in general.
EasyJet has been forced to cancel large numbers of flights over the past few weeks, due to a combination of a lack of staffing and increased demand for flights, due to COVID restrictions being relaxed. A little over a week after removing about 200 flights, EasyJet is now facing further cancellations and delays, adding to travel chaos in European airports. The problem is said to be a computer glitch, forcing the airline to call off hundreds of flights departing during the day. Many of around 200 EasyJet flights were reported as having been cancelled at the last minute, even after they had already completed their boarding.
On May 26, around 200 easyJet flights were cancelled at or near UK airports including Gatwick, Stansted, London, and Manchester. Around 10,000 passengers were affected by the cancellations Monday morning, The Independent reported, with easyJet pulling many flights from and to the main UK hubs EasyJet operates, including Londons Gatwick. British holidaymakers faced yet more travel chaos with EasyJet removing an additional 80 flights on Sunday, Eurostar trains experiencing further delays, and roads beginning to be congested as drivers returned from the Bank Holiday and Jubilee weekend breaks.
An easyJet spokesperson indicated passengers of cancelled flights in June will receive compensation. EasyJet said it had extended customer service hours, and was helping affected passengers to find hotel accommodations, if necessary.
One of the worst parts is we were unable, and are unable, to really talk to anyone at EasyJet, and have no idea why they are canceling flights.
The airline continues to run as many as around 1,700 flights, carrying about one-quarter of a million customers every single day. Like all airlines, EasyJet has been struggling to recruit again since the start of the pandemic, which has led to widespread redundancies amongst the cockpit and flying staff. French EasyJet pilots said that problems within the airline are leaving employees just as demoralised as when the flights were grounded in large numbers due to the pandemic. The union said in some cases managers in the airlines integrated control centre (ICC) at Luton, which controls operations across EasyJets whole network, were often waiting until the very last minute to cancel early-morning flights, even though they knew the previous evening there were no crews available.

Grant Shapps has also said that airlines must not oversell flights, causing some passengers to cancel entire holidays, and suggested travellers should receive an automatic refund of cancelled overseas holidays, similar to a rail delays refund scheme.
